Safety Standard 5
A stocked first aid kit is maintained on-site.
A first aid kit allows trained workers to respond to a
minor injury or illness, and to provide temporary
relief of a more serious injury until professional
medical assistance is obtained.
First aid supplies are required to be readily avail-
able per 29CFR1910.151(b). An example of the
minimal contents of a generic first aid kit is de-
scribed in American National Standard (ANSI)
Z308.1-2003 "
Minimum Requirements for Work-
place First-aid Kits
." The contents of the kit listed in
the ANSI standard should be adequate for small
worksites.
Safety Standard 6
Spill kit(s) is maintained on-site.
A spill kit allows workers to capture, contain, and
clean up spills or leaks of fuel, new or used oils,
antifreeze, solvents and other fluids. Every salvage
yard should maintain a spill cleanup kit on-site at
the facility in the event of an emergency spill.

A Safety Program of OSHA requirements per-
taining to Hazard Communication plan and
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemical identifi-
cation in which a particular individual is in
charge of regularly scheduled safety meetings
and inspections.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) regulations require training on particular
topics, such as personal protective equipment, fire
prevention, and hazard communications. OSHA
regulations for general industry are presented in
the 29CFR1910. Safety training material can be
provided through the I-CARE Safety Subscription.
WHAT TO DO:
1. Prepare a written Hazard Communication Plan
2. Designate a Safety Supervisor
3. Compile/maintain the SDS sheets for chemical
products stored on-site
4. Conduct Monthly Scheduled Safety Meetings
corresponding to the I-CARE standards and other
important topics. Log training events and maintain
records on-site.
5. Conduct and log regular/annual safety inspec-
tions. Maintain records on-site.
Safety Standard 8
Documentation of appropriate DOT training for
employees associated with the shipping of non
-deployed airbags.
The DOT requires that anyone involved with the
handling and shipping of airbags be trained and
certified on hazardous material or Haz Mat packag-
ing. Airbag inflators, airbag modules, and seatbelt
pre-tensioners fall under DOT’s least restrictive
Haz Mat as items containing minimal amounts of
explosive material. Training is required to package,
label and ship hazardous materials. Employees
designated to package Haz Mat such as non-
deployed airbags and are required to be certified at
least every three (3) years. Training material is
available on CD from Sue Schauls.
Safety Standard 9
Documentation of appropriate forklift training
for employees.
The OSHA rule mandates that Fork Lift Operators
are certified in safe operating procedures and gain
a full understanding of how a forklift, fork truck or
heavy duty front-end loader equipped with forks for
lifting works. It is also important to make all em-
ployees in the facility aware of the dangers and
limitations of a forklift in operation. Fork Lift Opera-
tors are required to be certified in operation and
awareness training at least every three (3) years.
Training material is available on CD from Sue
Schauls.
