Iowa Automotive Recyclers are required to ob-
tain a state Household Hazardous Material (HHM)
permit if the facility sells at retail to consumers
automotive products such as batteries, anti-
freeze (new/used), oil, oil filters and/or wind-
shield wiper fluid.
Household Hazardous Material
Retail Sales Per-
mit - Automotive salvage yards that sell any house-
hold hazardous material in Iowa, in any amount,
must obtain a Household Hazardous Material (HHM)
permit from the Iowa Department of Revenue. Iowa
retailers that sell Household Hazardous Materials
are also required to participate in a consumer infor-
mation program which includes posting information
about HHM (labels, signs, and brochures that can be
obtained from the DNR).
Household Hazardous Material commonly sold at
salvage yards include; Antifreeze, Batteries, Wind-
shield wiper fluid, Oil and Oil filters.

Display information provided by the Iowa DNR on
the proper use and disposal of household hazardous
materials.

The annual fee is $25, and should be made payable
to the Treasurer, State of Iowa. The permit is valid
from July 1 – June 30. The permit fee is not pro-
rated.
