Happy New Year Recyclers!
May the Odds be Ever in Your Favor.
Yes we did
see a few movies over the holiday break for those
who are Hunger Games fans.
But I think it is a fitting
sentiment because I keep hearing that tried-and-true
sales techniques just are NOT moving parts like they
used to and maybe some good luck is in order. Of
course luck favors the prepared...
So we start the year focused on selling parts and
wondering what can your association do to help
members sell parts.
I hope that the article “Sales
Slump or Cash Flow Crisis which in our business is
poor part sales sparks an idea or two for making it
through the downturn.
If I have anything to offer those in this situation, I can
pass along the insight gained at the ARA conference
last November in Phoenix and other tidbits gleaned
from industry news and the financial media. Most of
us have been reading the same sources but some-
times it can be helpful to compile information in to
small manageable concepts such as
parts market
targets:
Wholesale Markets.
Go beyond core buyers and
focus on re-manufacturing to reach an untapped
wholesale market. Manufacturing news says the re-
manufacturing markets are on the rise and the Re-
manufacturing Institute is said to be re-invigorated
having just come off a successful conference.
Consumer driven purchase preferences.
Tap in to
the wave of green consumer purchasing preferences.
Normally we don’t target consumers for parts sales
but joining forces with the local chamber of com-
merce’s “shop local” program may be some free pu-
bic relations that add some green “street cred.” If a
local program isn’t available then put together a pro-
motional campaign on the virtue of local sales of
green recycled parts. Utilize the local newspaper busi-
ness profiles.
Government driven markets.
Try tapping in to the
government sector such as the fleet vehicles at the
city, the car pool at the local university or school dis-
trict and promote recycled parts to help them meet
their green mandates that come with federal funding.
Globalization.
Foreign sales are another avenue. -
eBay Motors offers an affordable shipping option on
foreign parts sales and they just joined ARA. Get
signed up and start using eBay Motors, they boast a
15% increase in sales by those that have registered.
True or not 1% boost is better than a poke in the eye.
Thanks for listening
