But what about other parts of the standard that have
not changed? Are you ready to recap your facility
safety program?
A SAFETY PROGRAM need not be complicated but it
must be implemented. And not later but now. Before
announcing or training on the new rules for hazard
communication it is time to get your “ducks in a row”
on the existing regulations.
Fortunately those steps are simple. But as Zig Ziglar
once said simple does not mean easy! Or does it…
Simple steps to a
meaningful
SAFETY
PROGRAM in your automotive shop:
1) Designate a SAFETY SUPERVISOR
2) Make an INVENTORY of CHEMICALS in the
workplace—a list of the automotive fluids and
products used in the shop. See MSDS Library to
help with that at
3) Print out an MSDS or SDS for every chemical and
place it in a binder that is accessible by employ-
ees.
4) Conduct Monthly SAFETY TRAINING either
through meetings or by providing written material
to all employees. Include topic specific to an auto-
motive shops and cover all the elements that have
an annual training requirement such as personal
protective equipment, fire extinguishers, first aid
kits, eye wash stations, etc. Log attendance.
5) Develop a written Hazard Communication Plan
that narrates what your SAFETY PROGRAM en-
tails and who is responsible for implementation.
Of course if these tasks sound too daunting to com-
plete by December 1st. You can just start your Safety
Subscription with Sue Schauls to jumpstart your pro-
gram with a starter kit MSDS Binder and training
modules. The starter kit is $25 and the annually sub-
scription is $179. Each month an email will arrive with
safety training material to use in your safety program.
Throughout the year the topic with annual training
requirements are covered. Each module also come
with a regulatory summary of the rule so that the
Safety Supervisor knows what needs to be done prior
to training as well as any annual inspection checklist
that may be required. Order now if you are not al-
ready participating.
