Membership renewal time again! Each year when I
prepare the renewal forms I wonder if the associa-
tion hit the mark and met the expectations of the
membership.
I think we have been consistent in pushing the en-
velope in the past years with the implementation of
the I-CARE program, the PAC fund, Hill Day and
most importantly the outstanding Summer Outing
trade show and conference we’ve held with the
combined effort of many, many IAR direct and
associate members. Thank you.
But this year I wonder if we are also asking for the
support and “sweat equity” of our members?
I suspect not. The Iowa Automotive Recyclers has a
long history and rich culture that was instilled in us
over 55 years ago by our founder John C Vander
Haag of helping each other and supporting the as-
sociation. I want to emphasize what that kind of
support may look like:
1) Attend IAR events.
Simple to do. Registration
fees support the event and the association. Plus the
return on the investment is tenfold. With only $99
per member facility as registration to bring any
amount of attendees, you can’t go wrong on the
trade show and conference investment. Hill Day is a
free event with unlimited experience gained in gov-
ernmental affairs and the making of new law.

2) Support IAR Causes
. That’s right. Support the
causes. Give to the PAC fund or the Scholarship fund
(or donate to the auction) or provide used auto parts
to
Charitable Chariots
at Northwest Iowa Community
College. Any one of these contribution opportunities
will support and build the association and its reach in
the communities we serve.
3) Give your time and talent.
Don’t under-estimate
how valuable your time and your expertise is to the
association. Get involved. Join a committee or volun-
teer for the Summer Outing. Write an article for the
newsletter. Yes, even an article about you and your
automotive salvage facility is a manner of giving to the
association because it brings us all together more.
And at the end of the day, an association that can
bring its members together to fight for a common
cause and rely on each other for support or guidance
is the essence of an association in the first place.
4) Support with advertising.
That may seem like a
win win situation and it is! You get to show support of
the association AND reap the rewards of advertising
in our Who’s Who membership directory and our
newsletter that ultimately brings in more business to
you and financially support the association too.
And finally the most important, easiest and cheapest
way to show support of the Iowa Automotive Recy-
clers association.
5) Care enough to speak up.
Pick up the telephone,
send email or write a letter and tell me what you
think. I want to know and so do the IAR Board of Di-
rectors. Voicing your opinion is the best way to help
guide the actions of the steering committee we call
the Board of Directors. And don’t wait until you have
a strong opinion that seems counter to the direction
we are headed! Calling to voice support is important
too. And then there is that original thought too.
Chances are your big idea is the best idea we have
going—so call us up and have a chat.
Thanks for listening
